5 Self-care tips for surviving the World Cup
You are aware of all the toxins we are exposed to, willingly or not, through water, ground and air. Not all toxins are as easy to avoid but better be safe than sorry. So if it takes a little time to make something non-toxic at home – I’ll take it. Combine that with all the free time we will get soon once men are stuck to the TV every evening and voila, time to get creative and survive the monthlong World cup!
World cup is a monthlong? Yes, but when you think of it as a MONTH for self-care, you realize it will be awesome.
If you enjoy watching football, go ahead, but if you are not into it – this is for you! Low budget – max relaxation, all – hygge vibes, winter is coming after all.
Here are 5 tips on how to survive THE FOOTBALL MADNESS
1. Toxin-free Candles
Making toxin-free candles is super easy. You can choose one of the natural waxes like beeswax, soy or coconut, and you will need some tools.
I always try to reuse old candle containers, coconut, shells, and anything that fits your style.
You can add herbs and dried flowers, but be super cautious, because they must be placed as far as possible from the wick.
If you want to make them so pretty, I’d suggest going for a wide container, for safety reasons.
My wick of choice is a wooden one, as I find it very calming to hear it crack. I can close my eyes and I’ll be in my snowed-in cottage in the forest. Fireplace in front of me, gluhwein in my hand, snuggled with hubby and animals. 🙂
The whole process is very relaxing but can give you a real creativity boost as well. Don’t overthink it, don’t stress about how is it going to turn out, and just have fun with it!
2. Face masks
Ok, this one is a typical self-care cliche. However, I hear from a lot of clients that they often feel overwhelmed by information when it comes to choosing the ingredients for their masks.
Instead of doing all the research, it just feels easier to go get one of those cheap prepackaged – full of nasties – peel-offs, but we know better than that. Your body will thank you.
There are some good quality ingredients that suit pretty much every skin type and you probably already have them in the kitchen, so no need for spending an extra buck.
Greek yogurt, aloe vera, honey and rose water are great bases to which you add just one extra ingredient and have a ready-to-apply face mask.
Spices like turmeric or cinnamon are great for detoxing and making your skin look plumper. Matcha is great to drink, but add just a 1/2 tea spoon of it to some sour cream and honey, and you will give your skin a vitamin and mineral boost like no other.
Coffee grounds have anti-aging benefits and are a great exfoliator. That being said be careful not to overuse it and always follow with a moisturizer.
I love egg white-yogurt mask for their cool effect on my skin. Let it dry, rinse it off and go to bed feeling younger.
Keep it simple and spoil yourself, It’s about your glow and your you-moment.
3. Hair masks
My favorite winter DIY – hair masks.
I am all for hydration all year long, inside out, so helping my hair survive the cold months is my favorite part of my self-care routine.
Coconut oil as a multifunctional moisturizer is a great, affordable option. It’s enough to melt it in between the palms of your hands and spread it on the tips of your hair. Or even better, add some good old apple cider vinegar and honey (equal parts) and work it through damp hair. Rinse and shampoo after 20 min. You will love how your hair feels the next day.
For all of us who ever used to dye our hair, we know how damaged can your hair be after some time. This avocado/honey/olive oil is true bliss. Mix half avocado with 1 tbs olive oil and 1 tbs honey in a bowl, stir until combined, and spread from tips upwards. Let it sit for 20 min and shampoo it, repeat whenever you feel like your hair lost its gloss.
4. Soap Bars
Another one of the easy DIY projects that will help you survive the World Cup and can be your next favorite creativity boost, is soap making.
Making soaps after a Sunday brunch together with your friends or on Friday after work while he’s with the guys can be a lot of fun.
As with everything in life, we can make this as complicated as we want, but let’s keep it simple with Pour and Melt Method.
The tools don’t have to be professional because these bases are already cured, so you can reuse them in the kitchen after.
You will need a base of glycerin, goat milk, oatmeal or my personal favorite shea butter,
You simply cut a piece of it, melt it using a double boiler and pour it into your (silicon) molds when done. While melting, it’s up to you to add some fragrance and texture to your soap. Something like essential or fragrance oil, mint leaves, rosemary, or even color drops. Go crazy and have fun with this project.
It’s fun and easy and most importantly – safe for the skin.
5. Pillow spray
A pillow spray is not really on anyone’s essentials list, but it’s this “little something” that just makes a great finishing touch. You know that heavenly feeling when you have an evening “off duty”, so you pamper yourself…the hair is washed, body scrubbed and moisturized, feet are slippery…and as the best part, you eventually get in a fresh bed in fresh PJs? 🙌
If you are under 30, just wait a couple of more years. 😂
Now, go get some vodka.
Yes, vodka – for dissolving the essential oils and long shelf life! And some distilled water.
Depending on the size of your bottle you will have to readjust the amounts, just make sure you are using a dark glass bottle because we are using essential oils.
Typical relaxing oils like chamomile and lavender will work their magic, but feel free to add whatever you prefer. Add ½ teaspoon of vodka to your bottle, 12 drops of your main oil and 8 and 4 of the other two. It’s really up to you to decide which ones you like the most, as this does not only have to be your pillow mist. It’s a great non-toxic air refresher as well!
Or forget about all the tips for surviving the world cup and just go to sleep. Let the kids do their thing, let him watch all the matches, drop that Netflix binge, and take this opportunity to grant yourself a good night’s sleep.
I will talk about importance of sleep more in my next blog, but seriously consider going to bed early. Like, really early!
Setting priorities right about our health is maybe more important than ever, so be kind and loving to yourself. You can only do so much during the day, but let’s try to prioritize properly.
Btw, my DIY section is coming soon, so stay tuned for more DIY projects that are fun, easy and low budget.
And please let me know which one of these 5 self-care tips will you chose to get you through the monthlong World Cup. 🙂
Much love,
